Mikey Moore should start ahead of 28-year-old at Spurs – Tim Sherwood

Timo Werner has failed to impress at Spurs

Timo Werner has spent a year at Tottenham, but it is unlikely his current loan move will become permanent.

The German forward did enough in his first few months at the club to get his loan extended, registering three goals and two assists last season, however, his displays this season have been heavily criticised.

One of Werner’s greatest struggles has been his finishing. He has only scored once during the current campaign, in a Carabao Cup victory over Manchester City.

Although Werner has made 17 Premier League appearances since August, only four of these have been starts. Also, much of his match time has only occurred because of Heung-min-Son being injured.

Tim Sherwood wants Mikey Moore over Timo Werner at Spurs

While Werner likes to take on his man and is a willing runner, Tim Sherwood believes the 28-year-old does not possess the quality needed to start for Spurs.

Speaking to Discasino, he said: “I know it’s just a loan move and they haven’t paid a massive amount for him, but Timo Werner isn’t the answer for Tottenham.

“I’d say the only thing I like about him is that he never shirks a challenge and gives his best, but is he going to take the team forwards? I think there are better options.”

Sherwood believes there is a young left winger at Tottenham who has already surpassed Werner. He said: “I look at Mikey Moore, who’s still a young boy learning the trade, but I believe he’s a better option than Werner on that left-hand side at the moment,” Sherwood continued.

“The squad definitely needs rotation options – Ange Postecoglou will be the first person to tell you that after all the injuries they’ve had – but for the future of the club, I wouldn’t be looking to buy Werner from Leipzig on a permanent deal.

“Werner will need to think about his own future too. He’s getting to that age where he’d prefer to play every week and be one of the first names on the team sheet, so a move elsewhere might benefit everyone.”

Mikey Moore is taking advantage of his Spurs first-team opportunities

Despite another poor team performance as Spurs lost 3-2 to Everton, Mikey Moore secured his first goal contribution for Tottenham’s senior side. His excellent cross which set up Richarlison put his side within one goal of completing a dramatic comeback.

If Moore continues to perform at a high level while Werner remains out with a hamstring injury he picked up against Tamworth, the former Chelsea man will become Tottenham’s third-choice left winger and has little chance of joining Spurs permanently.
