Tottenham should have had a penalty against Everton – Former referee claims
Dermot Gallagher believes that Tottenham Hotspur have the right to feel aggrieved by one of the decisions that went against them in their 3-2 loss at Goodison Park on Sunday.
Defensive lapses cost Spurs yet again
On Sunday, Spurs produced the kind of performance that has become the norm for them under Ange Postecoglou away from home.
While the away side had more of the ball and played a lot of football in the Everton half, they were left extremely exposed at the back every time they lost the ball up the pitch.
The Toffees cut through them at will in the first half, with goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Iliman Ndiaye and an own goal from Archie Gray seeing them race to a 3-0 lead at the interval, before Spurs pulled two back through Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison in the second period.
Dermot Gallagher assesses Tottenham’s penalty shout
There were a couple of controversial moments in the first period, with both sides having penalty shouts waved away by referee Darren England.
The first of those involved a tangle between Heung-min Son and Jarrad Branthwaite in the box, with the Tottenham captain going down and being adamant that he should have had a penalty.
Speaking about that incident, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher told Sky Sports: “It’s clumsy and he doesn’t get the ball. The interesting thing is the referee immediately signals ‘no’ and the reason VAR doesn’t get involved is because Son comes across him.
“If he doesn’t do that, they may recommend a review. We saw it earlier in the season with Calvert-Lewin and Dan Burn.”
Gallagher disagrees with pundit on Everton’s penalty appeal
The other controversial incident was one which saw James Tarkowski going to ground, with the Everton defender claiming to have been dragged down by Radu Dragusin.
Reacting to that incident, Gallagher said: “I think the referee sees them both at it and waves it away immediately. If you see there, they are locked. He thinks ‘I’m not going to take sides’ and in the end [Dragusin] drags him down.”
However, pundit Stephen Warnock disagreed with that assessment, insisting that the Tottenham centre-back knew exactly what he was doing.
The former Villa left-back responded: “You are going to be locked at some point. But it’s then where it leads to. Tarkowski knows he’s lost his man and Dragusin also knows he’s lost him. He’s got to drag him down – I thought that was a penalty.”
