Tottenham’s young midfielder Matthew Craig has become a hot topic in the January transfer window, with Mansfield Town and Doncaster Rovers reportedly vying for his signature. However, it seems Mansfield have won the battle as Craig is set to join a new team for the next six months.

Matthew Craig’s season so far: From Barnsley to uncertainty

Matthew Craig, a 21-year-old midfielder and Scotland Under-21 international began this season on loan at Barnsley, having joined the Yorkshire side on a season-long deal during the summer transfer window.

This move followed a stint at Doncaster Rovers last season, where he made an impact in the latter half of the campaign. Craig’s start at Barnsley was promising, as he featured in 14 of the first 15 League One matches.

However, the midfielder’s fortunes took a sharp turn in recent weeks. Despite making 16 appearances in all competitions, Craig has not been included in Barnsley’s matchday squad for their last four fixtures.

This lack of game time marks a stark contrast to the early stages of the season and has led Tottenham to reconsider his loan arrangement.

Mansfield and Doncaster both wanted Matthew Craig

According to reports from Football Insider, Tottenham wanted to recall Craig from Barnsley and send him elsewhere to ensure he gains consistent playing time.

That development piqued the interest of League One’s Mansfield Town and League Two’s Doncaster Rovers, both of whom were eager to bolster their midfield options during the January transfer window.

Mansfield Town, currently ninth in League One following their promotion from League Two last season, see Craig as a valuable addition to strengthen their push for a top-six finish.

Meanwhile, Doncaster Rovers, who sit seventh in League Two and are firmly in the race for promotion, hoped that the return of a familiar face could provide the creative spark they need to secure a spot in League One next term.

Tottenham confirm Matthew Craig to Mansfield

Tottenham now confirm that Craig has been recalled from his Barnsley loan in order to make the move across League One to Mansfield instead.

His current contract with the Premier League side runs until June 2026, demonstrating their long-term faith in his potential.

However, the midfielder’s recent struggles for minutes at Barnsley highlight the delicate balance of nurturing talent while providing competitive opportunities.
