Tottenham looking at potential January signings in five positions – but there’s a catch
Tottenham Hotspur are expected to be one of the busiest clubs in the January window, with Alasdair Gold revealing that the Lilywhites are studying signings to strengthen five different roles.
Tottenham in need of January signings across the pitch
Tottenham’s injury crisis has severely exposed the lack of depth in the squad, with Ange Postecoglou having to use the same 14 or 15 players across the busy run of fixtures over the last couple of months.
That has led to accumulated fatigue, which has been evident in some of Tottenham’s recent performances, with many players limping over the finish line and struggling towards the end of matches.
Postecoglou has admitted on a number of occasions over recent weeks that the squad is in desperate need of help in January, and it looks like the Australian is going to get his wish.
Spurs looking for signings across the pitch
Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now said Spurs are looking at potential recruits across a number of positions, including a new centre-back, left-back and midfielder.
Additionally, he says the club would also be on the lookout for forwards, pointing out that Postecoglou himself has spoken about wanting more firepower upfront.
Finally, he claims that Tottenham are also considering their situation in goal, with Fraser Forster‘s inability to sweep up behind the high defensive line seen as something that is compromising Postecoglou’s system.
The Lilywhites are thus said to be contemplating whether to sign a goalkeeper on loan or to sign a long-term option who can take over as Guglielmo Vicario‘s backup after Forster leaves in the summer.
Spurs facing complications in January
However, Gold also states that Tottenham are well aware of how difficult finding the right profile of players for these roles can be in the middle of the season.
The journalist describes this as a ‘tricky marketplace’, particularly with clubs not wanting to sell their squad players as the group stage of the Europa League and Champions League is still not over.
Gold also adds that Tottenham’s new arrivals would either have to miss out on potential Europa League knockout matches or replace names who are already in that squad, thus making the decision complicated.
