James Maddison is at a career crossroads

When Maddison made the switch to Spurs last year, many saw the move as the ideal platform for him to reach the next level and put his name alongside the very elite of world football.

However, while the 27-year-old has produced many moments of magic in a Tottenham shirt, consistency has evaded the England international, who now finds himself out of Ange Postecoglou‘s first-choice starting eleven.

The next 12 months could be a crucial crossroads in the attacking midfielder’s career as it remains to be seen how he responds to the latest setback.

Maddison closing in on a weird record

Maddison’s class on the ball is undeniable, with the diminutive playmaker regularly making decisive contributions in the final third.

In fact, his last goal for Spurs, which came via a wonderful free-kick against Aston Villa, was the midfielder’s 50th Premier League goal of his career.

Opta Analyst have now provided a weird context to the Tottenham man’s goals, pointing out that none of his 50 strikes have come as a result of a header.

They reveal that the Tottenham man has the second-most number of goals in Premier League history among the players who have never scored a header, with former Chelsea man Damien Duff leading the pack with 54.

What this stat says about Maddison

Many will feel that there is not much we can read into this stat and that it belongs in the category of pub quiz trivia.

However, what it does reflect is the fact that Maddison is one of those players who only seems to score great goals.

Despite having the licence to get forward, he does not have the poacher’s instinct to arrive late in the box to score tap-ins, which is something the likes of Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski do have.
