The two Spurs games which Rodrigo Bentancur is still allowed to play despite ban
Despite being hit with a seven-game suspension, Rodrigo Bentancur is still allowed to play in two of Tottenham’s matches over the coming weeks.
The FA comes down hard on Rodrigo Bentancur
The Football Association confirmed Bentancur would have to serve a seven-match suspension and pay a £100,000 fine for his comments about Spurs teammate Heung-min Son which were made earlier in the summer.
They revealed that even though the Tottenham man had initially denied the charge, an independent regulatory commission found the midfielder to have breached the FA’s Rule E3.1.
This comes as a big blow for Ange Postecoglou at a crucial time in the season, particularly given that the Uruguayan has been on good form over recent weeks.
Bentancur can still play two matches for Tottenham
However, this does not mean that Spurs fans will not get to see Bentancur in action over the next month and a half.
Bentancur’s seven-match ban only applies to domestic games, which means that the midfielder would only be suspended for the any FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Premier League matches.
The ban does not apply to the Europa League as the competition comes under the jurisdiction of UEFA rather than the FA.
That means that the Tottenham star can still play in the club’s upcoming Europa League fixtures against AS Roma and Rangers on November 28 and December 12, respectively.
Ange Postecoglou has options
It is almost a given that Bentancur will start and play 90 minutes against both Roma and Rangers as Postecoglou will want to rotate his squad.
While Yves Bissouma has to take on most of the workload in the former Juventus man’s absence, Archie Gray might also be offered an opportunity to operate as a number six.
It was in the middle of the park that the 18-year-old shone at Leeds last season and many consider that to be the teenager’s best position.
