Former Tottenham scout Bryan King believes that Aston Villa have a huge advantage over Spurs in the race for one La Liga star.

According to reports from Spain, Tottenham are eyeing a move for Villarreal attacking midfielder Alex Baena in January.

This information was reported most recently by Fichajes, who claimed that Ange Postecoglou is a fan of Baena’s ability to distribute play and create attacking options.

It was explained Spurs see the Spanish international as a ‘key piece’ to solve the issues in midfield and in attack.

However, Tottenham are not the only club after the Villarreal man, with reports indicating that Newcastle United and Aston Villa are also fans of the 23-year-old.

King believes the attacking midfielder would prefer to reunite with his former boss Unai Emery at Villa Park rather than make the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

When asked about the speculation over Banea’s future, the former Tottenham scout told Aston Villa News: “I think he’d find it easy to join Villa and come into a club with a manager that he knows.

“Baena has worked with Emery. Therefore, I see no reason why Emery wouldn’t push for that transfer, and tell the club that Baena is a great prospect, a good player, and the player that he wants.

“And as a player who has worked with him, I think he’d be eager to join Villa and continue his career in the West Midlands.”

Spurs are up against it in the race for Banea

The Emery factor could prove decisive as players will always prefer to work in familiar surroundings with a coach whose system they know well.

The fact that Villa can also offer the midfielder Champions League football may put them in the driving seat in this transfer race.
