Tottenham star comments on ‘tough’ first few months at club
Lucas Bergvall has been speaking to the Swedish media about his start to life at Tottenham Hotspur, commenting on the challenges he has faced so far.
It is a difficult environment for Bergvall to find his feet
Tottenham Hotspur pipped Barcelona to the signing of Bergvall, which garnered significant excitement around the highly-rated 18-year-old.
His start to life at Spurs has been a challenge with relatively few minutes in the Premier League, with more exposure coming in the Europa League amongst heavily rotated squads in more challenging environments.
Yet to display the ability which allowed him to stand out at Djurgårdens IF, Bergvall has been speaking about his time at Tottenham which has seen his performances suffer inconsistency, notably during the 3-2 defeat at Galatasaray.
Bergvall shares his thoughts on his time at Tottenham
Speaking to Fotbolldirekt, Bergvall said: “It has been good, but also a bit up and down, of course.
“It has been tough and many matches, a lot of rotation in the team and mixed results.”
With Spurs suffering from inconsistent form, it is harder to give Bergvall opportunities to grow when every game is vital in Tottenham’s pursuit for trophy success and European qualification.
Bergvall’s position has greater demands and will take longer to settle
It is hard to not compare Bergvall, Archie Gray and Mikey Moore due to their age. Gray has arguably put in the strongest performances from fullback so far. However, their experience and roles within the team all differ too much to draw fair comparisons.
While Bergvall has played senior football, the speed of the Premier League and Europa League are proving a significant learning curve. He often comes into a team fulfilling Kulusevksi’s role, who is often asked to help with build-up and carrying throughout midfield.
It will take time for him to develop connections with his teammates and appreciate when he does or does not have time to hold onto the ball.
Bergvall would likely benefit from opportunities playing with the majority of Tottenham’s regular starters who could provide him support and guidance through games, but he may have to wait for that opportunity.
Until then, his ability to grow through adversity and overcome these challenges will benefit him and his development.
