Questions being raised about Ange Postecoglou’s demeanour

Following Tottenham’s 2-1 loss against Ipswich Town on Sunday, it is not just Postecoglou’s tactics that have come under scrutiny, but also the way he addresses the media.

Alan Pardew has told talkSPORT that he has never seen the Australian as crestfallen as he was on Sunday and advised the Spurs head coach to appear more confident in his interviews following bad results.

Meanwhile, Sam Allardyce has warned on Seaman Says podcast that if the Tottenham boss does not change the way he talks in interviews, he will continue to be targeted by the media.

Reason behind Postecoglou’s serious demeanour

Sam Matterface has now revealed that he has heard that Postecoglou deliberately tries to project himself as ultra-serious in his interviews.

The journalist explained that he does this in order to avoid being caricatured as a typical happy-go-lucky Aussie who lacks seriousness.

Matterface said on talkSPORT’s Premier League All Access podcast about Postecoglou: “What I’ve been told is, is that he’s so desperate not to be seen as sort of an Australian caricature. He doesn’t want to be Jesse Marsch 2, he doesn’t want people to throw the sort of Australian Ted Lasso thing at him.

“So he tries to sort of not be the playful, happy character and tries to be serious, that’s what I’ve been told. It doesn’t come across very well. And Mark Scott of Match of the Day has had two rather difficult exchanges with him in a couple of weeks. I know Crook and I have both had interesting exchanges with him as well over the last year.”

Managers need to manage perceptions

We do not know how factual Matterface’s assertion is, but it would not be overly surprising if there is truth to it.

Managers are not just public personalities, but they are the ones who represent the club in the media on a regular basis. All coaches thus have to manage the way they are perceived.

However, one would have thought that Postecoglou does that less than most as he comes across as authentic in most of his interviews.
