Gary Neville has shared his opinion on what Daniel Levy’s intentions are at Tottenham and has answered whether the club can challenge for trophies under the current ownership.

Daniel Levy is not a popular man among Spurs fans

Daniel Levy will point to how far the club have come both on and off the pitch in his two decades as chairman, with Spurs going from a lower mid-table team to a top-six side, and also becoming one of the highest revenue generators in world football.

However, the major black mark against the Spurs chairman will always be the lack of silverware, with the Lilywhites having won just one trophy during his time at the club.

The 62-year-old has gone through many different styles of managers during his time in North London and he will be desperately hoping that Ange Postecoglou is the one to end the club’s 16-year trophy drought.

Gary Neville believes Daniel Levy wants to sell

Neville believes that given the type of teams that Tottenham are up against, they need new owners to be able to compete for the biggest trophies.

The pundit suggested that Levy and ENIC are now looking to sell the club so that Spurs can get the resources needed to go toe-to-toe with the biggest sides in the division.

The former Man Utd defender said on It’s called Soccer: “If Tottenham had won four trophies in the past 10 years, that would be a fantastic period for Tottenham. If Ange can win an FA Cup this year and build on that with maybe a League Cup or a top four finish, that’s a successful period.

“You’re up against giants as Tottenham. They’re probably trying to sell the club I would imagine, they’re probably trying to bring in this huge owner to fund the team and spend the money that the Chelsea’s the Manchester United’s, City’s and Arsenal’s have spent. That will not happen under the current ownership.”

The era of owner-funded teams are over

Given the new financial landscape that football clubs are operating in, the era of owners bankrolling big-money transfers are over. Under the new financial rules, a team’s ability to spend on transfers and wages is directly tied to its revenue.

In fact, we have seen that even Man City and Newcastle have not been able to spend freely in recent transfer windows and have had to operate resourcefully.

Spurs cannot compete against the best teams in the world simply by being bought by a billionaire. It is more important than ever to have smart operators at the top who have a clear vision.

Liverpool’s model is the one that Tottenham and other clubs in the Premier League should be looking to follow.
