Rodrigo Bentancur speaks for the first time on expected lengthy suspension over Son comments
Rodrigo Bentancur has revealed what he has heard about his impending domestic football ban as reports circulate that he is expected to be suspended for seven matches.
Lengthy suspension for Rodrigo Bentancur?
Rodrigo Bentancur was previously charged with an “aggravated breach” of the FA’s rules after making a distasteful joke about his fellow Tottenham first team squad team-mate Heung-min Son.
Tottenham insider Paul O’Keefe revealed on Wednesday that the FA’s charge has been upheld and that the midfielder will be banned for the club’s next seven domestic matches, but will still be available to feature in the Europa League fixtures against AS Roma and Rangers.
There has been no official confirmation on the matter yet and the Spurs man has now revealed what he has heard about an impending ban.
Bentancur expected bad news over Son comments
The 27-year-old, who is currently with the Uruguay national squad, confessed that he had been expecting a harsh sanction, having spoken to his agent about the same.
However, he revealed that Tottenham have not contacted him yet to confirm the length of the ban, insisting that he is focused on doing well for his national side.
When asked about the reports of a seven-match ban, Bentancur told ESPN Deportes: “My agent called me and said that he had been notified that this was the sanction. So far, the club hasn’t contacted me.
“I already knew more or less where the hand was going. Now the sanction is out, I want to be calm here in the national team and then we’ll see when it’s time for me to go back there.”
What did Rodrigo Bentancur say about Heung-min Son?
In a clip posted on social media from a June interview conducted in Spanish on Uruguayan Television programme “Por La Camiseta,” host Rafa Cotelo asked Bentancur for a Spurs player’s shirt, to which he replied, “Sonny’s?” [Heung-min Son], adding: “It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”
The matches which Bentancur is set to miss

A harsh lesson for Bentancur
Whatever Bentancur’s intention might have been when he made the distasteful joke, this will be a lesson for him the midfielder, who will hopefully learn from his mistake.
While it would come as a big disappointment to miss seven matches at a crucial junction in the season, the former Juventus man would have been expecting this for a while and will be keen to get it over and done with.
