Tottenham take big step that could see them take advantage of Manchester City's 115 charges

0

Manchester City are still facing potential punishment for the 115 charges against them for breaching Premier League rules, and if they are found guilty, Tottenham Hotspur could be set to take advantage after the club’s latest move.

What are Manchester City’s 115 charges?

Though they may have won the Premier League four years in a row, claimed a Champions League crown, and won multiple FA Cups and Carabao Cups, Manchester City are in a rather precarious position as things stand.

City are alleged to have breached Premier League rules as far back as 2009, shortly after the takeover of the Abu Dhabi United Group, with financial irregularities, unusual transfer activity, and not correctly reporting player and manager salaries.

The issues span over a number of years, but under the 1980 Limitation Act’s six-year period for legal claims for breaches of contract in the UK, some older issues may be timed-out, though the the six-year period could actually begin from when the breaches were revealed in a loophole that becomes active if incidents have been concealed.

If found guilty, there have been calls for Man City to be stripped of their titles, to get a huge points deduction, and for them to even be relegated.

Tottenham Hotspur want compensation

City are still waiting for the verdict, with the allegations being heard by an independent regulatory commission who are expected to offer their findings in the New Year.

Now, in a report from The Times, it has been revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are one of four clubs who are seeking legal counsel and who have been looking to receive significant financial compensation if City are found guilty.

Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United have all formally registered possible compensation claims through arbitration, just in time to beat a potential statute of limitations deadline last week.

The compensation notices were filed as clubs were told they may be too late to do so by the New Year, as that would be outside of the six-year period spanning from November 5, 2018, when the breaches were first leaked.

Money means nothing in this instance

Although the compensation would likely be huge if it comes Tottenham’s way, it’s really not meaningful, and really doesn’t make up for the fact that the English game has potentially been dominated by a club that has broken the rules again and again, costing other teams trophies and success.
