Spurs are much better in the second-half – Stats show an interesting trend

The numbers paint a clear picture of why Tottenham Hotspur are a completely different animal in the second half of matches than they are in the first period.

Tottenham’s bouncebackability

Spurs showed their powers of recovery yet again against Aston Villa on Saturday, coming back from 1-0 down at half-time to emerge 4-1 winners.

It was the eighth time that Tottenham overcame a deficit to get all three points at home in 2024, with the club equalling the record set by Newcastle United back in 2002 (Squawka).

The Lilywhites’ ability to bounce back in matches is down to the fact that they are a considerably better team in the second half than they are before the interval.

A team of two halves

According to BBC Match of the Day 2, Spurs’ metrics at home in the second period of Premier League matches are far superior to their numbers in the 45 minutes.

Tottenham have scored double the amount of goals in the second half of games, have had more shots on target, and have a higher xG.

They also do much better defensively after the interval, having conceded fewer goals, fewer chances and a much lower xG against.

Teams struggle to cope with Tottenham’s intensity

These numbers clearly show that Tottenham are much fitter than most of the opposition sides that they come up against. That is something Ange Postecoglou has worked really hard on.

While teams are able to sometimes keep them out by working extremely hard in the first period, they eventually run out of gas, allowing Spurs to do maximum damage late on.

The win over Aston Villa was a perfect illustration of that, with three of Tottenham’s four goals coming in the 75th minute or later.
