Plenty of positives for Spurs

There were a lot of positives to take from Sunday’s 4-1 win for Tottenham, particularly considering how tactically well-drilled Aston Villa were in the first half.

They hardly gave the home side any space in the final third and posed a threat on the counter-attack, but Ange Postecoglou’s men managed the game brilliantly, and in the end, they blew Unai Emery’s side out of the water in the second period.

It was the sort of performance that demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that Spurs are heading in the right direction and further cemented the status of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as a fortress.

Dominic Solanke on Spurs tactical tweak

Solanke expressed his delight at the fact that Tottenham were able to respond brilliantly to going a goal down on this occasion, unlike their defeat at Selhurst Park.

The centre-forward admitted that Spurs had to tweak things at half-time, given the way that the Villans were set up.

The striker, who netted a brace, told Sky Sports (via BBC Sport): “We stuck with it. A few times this season we’ve gone a goal down. Against Palace, we didn’t react in the right way but today we did. We always believe we can score many goals. It all came together today in the second half.

“We had to adapt to the way they were playing. At half-time, we had time to regroup and discuss what we had to do. When we are playing well we can score many goals and we showed that today. We’ve had some great games but haven’t managed to do it the whole season but we think we’re capable of it.”

Solanke delighted to get on the scoresheet

Solanke had been playing brilliantly all season and had been contributing immensely to the side with his work off the ball, and the striker got his just rewards on Sunday.

Both of his goals were typical poacher’s finishes, and the striker was particularly proud of his sexy dink over Emi Martinez for his first.

When asked about being back among the goals, Solanke said: “It’s been a few games without one [goal]. I’ve been trying to get one and I got two. Buzzing with it. Nice dink finish, I enjoyed that.”
