Glenn Hoddle highlights ‘massive mistake’ Daniel Levy made at Spurs

Daniel Levy has come in for plenty of criticism during his tenure as Tottenham Hotspur chairman, and club legend Glenn Hoddle has picked out one particular moment where a big mistake was made by Levy.

Daniel Levy should not have sacked Jose Mourinho

It has now been more than 16 years since Tottenham last won a trophy, with the 2008 League Cup-winning side securing silverware against Chelsea.

For Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle, that trophy drought has been far too long, and could have been ended a lot sooner, had Daniel Levy had a little more patience with Jose Mourinho.

Speaking on The Overlap, Hoddle said: “I think Daniel Levy made one massive mistake. Jose Mourinho gets them to a cup final, be it a League Cup final. That was the first thing he won at Chelsea, it was a stepping stone. [Levy] sacked him on the Monday [before the final].

“That doesn’t make sense to me and it never will. I don’t understand that at all. You bring someone in to win a trophy, and he’s got a good record against Pep Guardiola, too. You then put, no disrespect, a young coach in who’s not done this before.

“He brought him in for a trophy. That’s what they wanted, and it would have been a stepping stone for Spurs, too. If he had stayed, there might have been another trophy, and then another.”

Football has to come first for Tottenham Hotspur

Levy has been celebrated for his business acumen and the way he has helped the club grow commercially, but has faced heavy criticism from the fanbase for the way he has invested, or failed to invest, in the playing squad.

Hoddle agrees, adding: “I don’t think the attitude has been to put the football first. [Levy] would have sacked himself if he was a manager who hadn’t won a trophy for so long.

“He’s done a brilliant job with the stadium, running the business side of things, unbelievable. But is it to the detriment of the football team? Are we going and getting the best players? Everyone wants to play in that stadium, there’s a lot of good things about Tottenham.”

Bad decisions have been made

I totally agree with the idea that Mourinho should not have been sacked when he was. Why you wouldn’t leave him in charge for that final is beyond me, and will always go down as one of the strangest decisions Levy has ever made. It was quite literally self-sabotage, and it cost us a genuine shot at silverware.
