2024 has been a mixed bag for Spurs

Spurs fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon, compounding a miserable start to the season whenever the Lilywhites have played away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side have now won just one away game in the Premier League this season, a 3-0 win over Manchester United at the end of September.

Aside from that, Spurs also picked up a win on their travels against Ferencvaros in the Europa League, and managed to scrape through against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup.

Meanwhile, they have lost against Newcastle United, Brighton, and Crystal Palace away from home this term, and only registered a draw against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Overall in 2024, Spurs have managed five wins away from home, have drawn four games, and have lost seven away matches in the calendar year so far.

That includes heavy defeats last season against Fulham (3-0), Newcastle (4-0), and Liverpool (4-2). But, there are some highlights, with a 4-0 win away at Villa Park and a 3-0 win away against Sheffield United.

Ange’s away record in full

Looking further back at the whole of Postecoglou’s tenure with Spurs, the club has registered eight wins, seven draws, and nine defeats from 24 away games.

Of those wins, three came against relegated teams, and two against teams who had been reduced to ten men.

Spurs have been behind in 14 matches away from home with Postecoglou at the helm, and have managed to win just one of them, against Burnley.

What’s the problem?

Away games are always difficult, especially at the top level of the English game, but this is a worrying trend for Spurs under Postecoglou.

The main issue, really, is that Tottenham’s style of play right now is so dependent on games being open and free-flowing, so that chances can be created, especially on the counter attack. When teams are at home, they are better able to set up with a resolute defence and dictate the flow of the play, making it very hard for Spurs to get into the game.
