Pundit says Ange Postecoglou made big Spurs selection error against Palace

Jamie O’Hara thinks Ange Postecoglou made a big blunder in his starting eleven against Crystal Palace on Sunday as Tottenham fell to a 1-0 away defeat.

Bruising defeat for Tottenham

Tottenham’s 1-0 loss at Selhurst Park was a morale-sapping result for everyone associated with Spurs, with the performance showing why the Lilywhites are still some distance away from being able to compete at the top end of the table.

The away side struggled to create too many openings against a resolute Eagles defence, and were second to most loose balls throughout the game.

It continues a worrying series of results away from home for the Lilywhites in the Postecoglou era, with the North London side having won just one and lost three of their five away matches this season.

Jamie O’Hara points the finger at Postecoglou

O’Hara took issue with Postecoglou’s decision to start Mikey Moore against Palace, suggesting that it showed bad judgement to throw a 17-year-old into the side in a tough Premier League away fixture.

The pundit suggested that Timo Werner should have started on the left in place of the injured Heung-min Son.

O’Hara told Sky Sports after Spurs’ 1-0 loss: “I think Ange [Postecoglou] got it wrong. I think he picked the wrong team. Starting a 17-year-old away from home against Crystal Palace is a big, big ask. He [Moore] did alright but it’s a big ask to come in for that game and make something happen.

“Use him for 20 or 25 minutes, but the damning indictment of that is that Timo Werner has been so poor he [Postecouglou] has had to start Mikey Moore. But, I would have stuck with Werner and given him another game, especially away from home as he’s experienced.”

Hindsight is a wonderful thing

While O’Hara is making this claim with hindsight, he and other pundits might have been just as quick to criticise Postecoglou if he had started Werner over Moore, given the German’s poor form of late.

The teenager was riding high on confidence after his performance against Alkmaar, and the Spurs head coach took a brave call by handing him a start.
