Postecoglou puts trust in Mikey Moore
The young winger turned in a high-quality performance in midweek against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League, earning plaudits from fans and pundits alike for his fearless, exciting display.
With Heung-min Son struggling with his fitness, Ange Postecoglou decided to rest his captain again this weekend for the trip to Selhurst Park.
And with Wilson Odobert still not quite fit enough to play from the start, the Spurs boss had a decision to make: Stick with Timo Werner, try Richarlison out of position on the left, or put faith in 17-year-old Mikey Moore.
In the end, Postecoglou opted for Moore, much to the delight of the Tottenham faithful. And in doing so, inadvertently made history for Spurs.
Mikey Moore in the history books
As per OptaJoe, Mikey Moore’s start in the Premier League this weekend made him the youngest Spurs player to start a game in the top flight for more than 30 years.
Moore was 17 years and 77 days old on Sunday, but he’s still not quite the youngest-ever full debutant for the Lilywhites. That honour falls to Stephen Carr.
The former Spurs defender was 17 years and 28 days old when he made his full debut against Ipswich Town in September 1993.
Moore was the right call
Regardless of the result, or even how Moore performed, it was the right time to give him this start. He’s earned it over the last couple of games in the Europa League and he needs to be given more chances to flourish on the biggest stage if he is to keep developing how we want him to.
