One of Tottenham’s most important players

Cristian Romero has come under a bit of criticism this season due to the errors he has made, which have cost his side points.

The Tottenham vice-captain has failed to live up to the high standards he has set for himself last season, but he remains crucial to Ange Postecoglou’s set-up.

Not only does his one-v-one defending help the Lilywhites play a high line but his passing out from the back is also crucial to the way they build out from the back.

Cristian Romero’s strange stat

While Romero does well in many key metrics such as duals won, pass completion and interceptions, it turns out that he is also near the top of the Premier League in one strange stat.

Using stats from Opta Sport, BBC Sport has revealed a list of players across the Premier League who have walked the most distance this season.

It turns out that Romero has walked a total of 27.1 km across Tottenham’s seven league matches this season, which is the highest among Spurs players and the third highest across the Premier League.

Stat indicative of how teams play against Spurs

The fact that Tottenham’s centre-backs spend a lot of time strolling and walking on the pitch shows that they do not have much pressure put on them over 90 minutes, with opposition sides not coming into Spurs’ half too often.

It also shows that teams do not tend to press Postecoglou’s men high up the pitch and tend to sit off their centre-backs. Spurs also usually have the vast majority of possession.
