Ange Postecoglou doesn’t agree with Spurs fans’ trophy demands, but he has a good reason

Tottenham Hotspur fans are still waiting for a trophy, and after 16 years, it’s fair to say the supporters would take any silverware they can get. But, Ange Postecoglou thinks that’s the wrong attitude.

Spurs fans want to win something

The League Cup win in 2008 remains the last time Tottenham fans saw their club lift a trophy. Since then, the Lilywhites have made it to the Champions League final in 2019, and the League Cup final again in 2021, losing both games.

The arrival of Ange Postecoglou, a manager who has won trophies at every club he has managed, has given many hope that he can be the one to end that drought.

Speaking to Optus Sport about the inherent need for success, namely a trophy, at Spurs, Postecoglou explained how he thinks the Spurs fans feel about the long wait they’ve endured.

He said: “You try and understand what you’re walking into before you take a role I’ve always tried to do that. So I’ve taken over one of the biggest clubs in the world. It has fantastic facilities and resources, which is obvious.

“The other obvious thing is they haven’t had success for quite a while and you kind of know what that feels like but what does that feel like here [at Tottenham]? What I have learned is that there is a desperation for that feeling of we’ve won something, which I understand but don’t necessarily subscribe to. I don’t think that’s where this club really wants to be.”

Postecoglou wants sustained success

Expanding on this differing of opinion on the matter of winning a trophy, Postecoglou made it clear that he doesn’t just want one trophy, he wants consistent success.

“I just don’t think it’s a club that wants to win anything I think it wants to be a club that is competing for everything and that’s the bridge I’m trying to build at the moment to get everyone to see that,” he continued.

“But maybe if I was a supporter I wouldn’t be as willing to accept that as a premise from a manager because I’m not the one who has been in the terraces for the last 15 years or the last 60 years.”

One trophy is not enough

Postecoglou is absolutely right. Tottenham do need to win a trophy, just to end that cycle of failure, but that cannot be the end of it. The size of the club, the resources it has, Tottenham Hotspur has to push on and become the kind of club that challenges for major honours year after year.
