Ange Postecoglou opens up on his experience of Premier League ‘pretentiousness’

0

Since arriving in the Premier League last summer, Ange Postecoglou has made quite the impression, for better or worse, and the Spurs boss has now been discussing the weight of expectation that comes with managing in the English top flight.

Postecoglou finds success everywhere he goes

The Greek-born Australian coach has built a brilliant reputation throughout his managerial career. Postecoglou first rose to prominence with South Melbourne in his native land.

From there, he moved on to manage in Japan with Yokohama, before taking on the top job at Celtic. He has won trophies everywhere he has been, most notably the treble with the Scottish giants in the season before he joined Spurs.

During his time in North London, Postecoglou has won plenty of plaudits for his adventurous style of football and his general openness with the media.

But, the Spurs boss has had his fair share of criticism, too, especially in the wake of the 3-2 defeat to Brighton before the international break.

Premier League arrogance irks Postecoglou

Postecoglou is very much accustomed to unhappy supporters and flying in the face of negativity, though, and in his latest interview with Optus Sport, he insisted the pressures of managing in the Premier League are nothing new to him when it boils down to it.

He said: “There’s a little bit of pretentiousness and arrogance about people in the Premier League thinking they’re in a special space. But it’s still football.

“Whether it’s 1,000 South Melbourne supporters who aren’t happy with me after a game, or hundreds of thousands around the world. It’s still the same to me. I care about what I do and if I’ve upset one person that’s enough for me. The scrutiny isn’t the challenge.”

Thick skin will save Postecoglou

Postecoglou clearly doesn’t let outside criticism get to him, and that’s fundamental to his chances of achieving success with Spurs. You have to be resilient to survive in the Premier League, and Postecoglou has that in bucketloads, which can only serve himself and the team well as he continues to work on this exciting project.
