Radu Dragusin’s stats for Romania show that Spurs have a hidden gem

Radu Dragusin finally got a chance to play some minutes this week after being called up to the Romania national team. The performance he delivered in their 3-0 win over Cyprus shows he has something to offer in North London.

Radu Dragusin’s Romania took on Cyprus in a UEFA Nations League match on Saturday evening, putting three past the home side without reply.

This result continues Romania’s fine form in the competition – recording three wins out of three against Cyprus, Kosovo and Lithuania. Dragusin and co now sit at the top of League C Group 2.

The Tottenham centre-back started the game and played 82 minutes before being handed a bit of a rest, and he certainly left his mark on proceedings.

The headline of the night may be Radu Dragusin scoring his first international goal for Romania – a header from a corner – but his performance was so much more than that.

Fotmob handed the Spurs star an 8 out of 10 rating for his efforts. Dragusin had 52 touches of the ball in his 82 minutes and recorded a 98 per cent passing accuracy during that time.

Dragusin attempted two long balls and played them both perfectly. Cyprus also failed to dispossess him a single time in the match. He won 100 per cent of his tackles and recorded four defensive actions – two clearances, a headed clearance, and an interception.

He won three duels against the Cyprus attackers, recovered the ball once, and was only dribbled past once in the 3-0 win. Not to mention his headed goal to put the match beyond Cyprus.

Where does Dragusin fit at Tottenham?

The theme seems to be that Dragusin shines for Romania but struggles for Tottenham. Of course, he also stood out immensely during his time with Genoa. So, why is it not quite happening in N17?

The answer is two-fold. Dragusin is not getting too many minutes in a Spurs shirt due to the importance of Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven. However, I would also say that the Postecoglou high-line isn’t a natural fit for Dragusin. He thrives more as a deep-lying, back-to-the-wall, defending-his-own-box type centre-back – which fits Romania and Genoa far more than Tottenham.
