Postecoglou will start attacker in Europa League after impressing against Man Utd
A big update has emerged regarding Timo Werner ahead of Tottenham’s first Europa League away fixture of the season.
Werner’s struggles against Man Utd
Werner was handed his first Premier League start of the season at Old Trafford and the forward would have been disappointed not to get on the scoresheet in the 3-0 win.
While the German was aggressive in the way he carried the ball and made some good runs, he fluffed three separate one-on-one chances with the goalkeeper.
The 28-year-old continues to look devoid of confidence and conviction in front of goal, which will be a concern for Ange Postecoglou, given the injuries he is dealing with at the moment.
Postecoglou to keep faith
GiveMeSport have been informed by their sources at Tottenham that Werner is set to retain his place in the club’s starting eleven for their clash against Ferencvaros on Thursday.
The report says that the German international will be given a chance to build up his confidence against the Hungarian side after missing some big chances against United.
It is explained that Ange Postecoglou continues to see Werner as an ‘important’ squad player and has a ‘strong belief’ in the attacker, while the on-loan RB Leipzig man also has the trust of his Tottenham teammates.
Moore breathing down his neck
Werner was decent against United apart from his missed chances but Postecoglou will know that he cannot afford to keep playing a forward who is so profligate in front of goal.
After Mikey Moore’s impressive cameo on Sunday, the Australian might be tempted to hand the 17-year-old a start in the Carabao Cup or Europa League over the coming weeks.
Werner is thus under pressure as he would be aware that another poor showing might see him fall further down Postecoglou’s pecking order.
