Werner’s first PL star of the season

With Heung-min Son, Wilson Odobert and Richarlison all out injured, Ange Postecoglou had no choice but to hand Timo Werner his first Premier League start of the season.

While the German worked tirelessly off the ball and looked dangerous in possession, he fluffed his lines on three separate occasions after being put through on goal.

The on-loan Leipzig star has received plenty of criticism for his poor finishing over the years and that part of his game continues to hold him back.

Werner mocked

German outlet Fussball Transfers have criticised Werner for his poor finishing at Old Trafford, referring to his lack of composure in front of goal as an ‘old illness’.

The report says that the 28-year-old actually delivered a decent display overall but adds that he ‘simply didn’t score goals’.

It is suggested that the on-loan RB Leipzig man offered some ‘small sign of lie from the shadows’ in Manchester.

The publication then remarks that Werner’s ‘legs often seem too fast for his head’ and that in order to be considered ‘back from obscurity’, the forward has to start converting chances with more regularity.

Good performance overshadowed

There were plenty of positives with Werner’s displays at Old Trafford, with the forward being quite aggressive all game and giving Noussair Mazraoui a torrid time both on and off the ball.

However, he clearly lacked any confidence or conviction in front of goal, and never looked like beating Andre Onana each time he went through one-on-one.
