Class is permanent

Romero has not had the best of starts to the season, making errors that cost the Lilywhites against the likes of Newcastle and Arsenal.

However, the 26-year-old demonstrated at Old Trafford on Sunday just why he is rated by many as one of the best in the world.

The Argentine was flawless defensively, with the United forwards hardly having any joy against him, while he also helped Ange Postecoglou’s men beat the home side’s press time and again in the first half with impressive passes into Tottenham’s midfield and forward line.

Sutton’s admission

Strikers who come up against Romero certainly know they are in for a tough game, with the Spurs vice-captain being one of the most aggressive defenders in world football.

Sutton admitted that as a centre-forward, he would have hated playing against the World Cup winner, describing the Tottenham man as an ‘animal’.

The former Celtic striker said on BBC’s Monday Night Club: “I mean, you wouldn’t want to go up against Romero. He is super aggressive, isn’t he? He is an animal at times, the way that he uses his body and attacks the ball. I think he is phenomenal.”

Impregnable wall

Romero showcased on Sunday just how dominant he can be when he is at his best, with the Tottenham man making five ball recoveries, two interceptions and two clearances against the Red Devils (Fotmob).

His passing out from the back was also exemplary, with the centre-back making 107 of his 119 attempted passes, finishing with a pass completion rate of 90 per cent.

The former Atalanta man also nearly found the back of the net, with his acrobatic scissor volley in the first-half just going the wrong side of the post, with Andre Onana rooted to his spot.
