Dejan Kulusevski tells Spurs teammate to trust in himself and ignore critics

The Tottenham Hotspur team may be firing on all cylinders right now, but they’ve had their fair share of criticism. Dejan Kulusevski has some advice for one of his teammates, and praises the form he’s in at the moment.

Kulusevski impressed by Brennan Johnson’s form

Football fans are fickle and quick to jump on players when they need a scapegoat. The latest Tottenham target for that negativity was Brennan Johnson.

After the North London derby, the young winger was heavily criticised online by Spurs fans, to the extent that he had to deactivate his social media accounts.

Since then, Johnson has scored four goals in four games, and looks to be brimming with confidence now after yet another goal in the win over Manchester United.

Speaking to the press (via Football.London) about Johnson’s recent exploits, Dejan Kulusevski lavished praise on his colleague.

He said: “[Brennan’s been] unbelievable, but that’s a good thing [he is off social media], because social media is overrated, I think. So, he can focus on the right things, to play football. Four games, four goals is unbelievable.

“[Against United], he could have scored two — he hit the post one time — but he’s been doing really good, and he’s a really good guy, young guy, and we need him. We need him to perform like this every game, and we’re here to support it.”

Brennan Johnson has to ignore the noise

Johnson cost Spurs £50m last summer, and much has been said about the Welshman’s price tag since, with some using that value against him.

Discussing the idea of a transfer fee adding pressure to players, Kulusevski said: “I think it’s so much that can weigh down on you as a player, because millions of people have opinions on you every day. But the important thing is to not listen to anybody, and just to be with your family and trust in yourself and work hard, then nothing can stop you.

“I think every player goes through [tough times], and you just have to go through it because you just need to learn. Sometimes you’re questioning everything, but you just have to forget and remember why you started and remember who you are and where you want to go. That’s what I’m doing right now.”

Brennan’s rise has opened up new path for Kulusevski

It is always good to see a player go through a purple patch, but there is an extra added bonus to Brennan Johnson’s recent form: It’s allowed Kulusevski to move inside and flourish as a central midfielder, too.

Previously, the two players were competing with one another for that right-winger spot, but Johnson has proven that he is the right man to take up that role, allowing Ange Postecoglou to play Kulusevski in his preferred number 8 role.
