Welcome to the big time, Brennan Johnson – opinion

0

In a few years, the world will either call me a prophet or a fool.

At 2:33 pm, on September 29th, 2024, a few hours before the game, I tweeted this for the entire world to see. “I have a strange feeling this is gonna be Brennan Johnson’s breakout game and the point we remember where the world took notice of his game #MUNTOT.”

Brennan Johnson – Four goals in four games

Let’s provide some context on the tweet. Johnson had just scored 3 goals and 1 assist in the past three games. In previous weeks, he had endured some mindless abuse from disgraceful fans and losers alike. It got so bad, that Johnson decided to delete his Instagram. From the moment he deleted his social media account, he went on a tear for the next three games.

With Manchester United, a highly successful and prestigious club, all eyes would be on a Tottenham team missing its captain Heung-Min Son. With our top attacker out, and plentiful injuries in our front three, we needed someone to take the bull by the horns and deliver in a pivotal game. Fortunately for us fans, the lads dominated United 3-0 and with ease.

But here is what stood out to me the most. Yes, Dejan Kulusevski crushed it in the midfield. The offence was firing on all cylinders to the point that Tottenham scoring six goals would not have shocked anyone.

The best part about this game is that Brennan Johnson was able to announce his presence to the world on the big stage and hush some of the critics who placed dirt on his name.

Due to him being a £48M transfer from Nottingham Forest, many have placed the blame on his shoulders for the lack of goal contributions this season. Yes, it was a hefty price tag, but the plan was to bring him along slowly.

Unfortunately, due to injuries or lack of options, he was thrust into the action from the moment he joined the team. With 19 G+As in 45 games with Tottenham, it’s a wonder that the lad is only 23 years old (FbRef.com).

I want you to read the last sentence out loud again. He’s only 23 years old!

Brennan Johnson has arrived, and he is here to stay

Here is where I want to drive the point home for everyone. With each game he plays, he is gaining experience to eventually become the best winger he can be. With each successful game, you can see his confidence growing and his willingness to attack players out wide. With his speed and abilities to beat players to the outside, his talent makes him a mainstay in Ange Postecoglou’s high-octane attack.

His great game in front of the world this week is enough to get people talking, but it will also give him the confidence to carry out more standout performances. Individuals are allowed rough patches in their careers. Even the greats had downticks in their performances from time to time. But to have this breakout while enduring easily one of the most difficult times of his career takes heart and courage.

I already believe Johnson will have a great season and will stamp his place as a mainstay not only in this attack but in the future of Tottenham.

His versatility and willingness to work hard will be the reason he is not only successful here, but also the reason he will increase his chance of becoming a Tottenham folklore.

We are looking for the next Tottenham icons with Harry Kane leaving for Germany and Sonny getting older by the day. But I believe the next great player is here already, and lucky for us, he just announced it to the world this week.
