It’s time for Brandon Austin to start his first game for Spurs – opinion

Brandon Austin has still never made a senior appearance for Tottenham despite being with the club since developing through the academy. Surely, this season, that needs to change, and the perfect opportunity to resolve this is just around the corner.

Brandon Austin can be trusted for Europa League

The fact that Brandon Austin is now 25-years-old and his only senior, competitive experience amounts to 14 matches for Norwegian outfit Viborg FF, and five appearances for Orlando in the MLS, is frankly ridiculous.

To be honest, I can’t believe he hasn’t moved on already. But, fair play to him, he’s stayed loyal and clearly wants to make something of himself at Spurs.

He’s not a bad keeper either, and Ange Postecoglou really needs to make use of him this season whenever he can, to give Guglielmo Vicario a rest.

Up next for Spurs is a trip to Hungary in the Europa League to play Ferencvaros, and I would like to posit that this is the ideal time to finally let Austin play his first game for Spurs.

No offence to the opposition, but Tottenham should not be conceding too many chances to a team like Ferencvaros, meaning Austin would likely not even be that busy (touch wood). And, even if he did have saves to make, I’m pretty sure he would manage and come out of the game enriched and happy.

Assuming Cristian Romero is playing on Thursday now that his suspension is over, and let’s say Archie Gray, Ben Davies, and Destiny Udogie alongside him, that’s a defence I would trust to protect any goalkeeper.

Anything but Fraser Forster

Ultimately, we just cannot see Fraser Forster getting more minutes in goal when we have an academy product sitting there waiting to play for his boyhood club.

Forster is not a bad keeper, but he looked poor in the 2-1 Carabao Cup win against Coventry City, and at 36-years-old (and with his contract running out) there is simply no need to use him ahead of Austin.

The only problem is, Postecoglou put Forster into his Europa League squad instead of Djed Spence, which, if he does neglect to use the veteran keeper, will look like an even more bizarre decision. Still, let’s hope he favours logic over his pride when it comes to selecting his backup goalkeeper from here on out.
