How many Spurs games will Radu Dragusin miss after Europa League red card?

Tottenham may have got off to a winning start in the Europa League in midweek, but Ange Postecoglou does still have the issue of Radu Dragusin picking up a suspension as a result of his red card against Qarabag.

Here are the details of the games he will miss and what the plan will be to replace him.

Radu Dragusin suspension explained

In the seventh minute of the game against the Azerbaijan champions, Dragusin‘s poor first touch led to his opponent getting the better of him and the Romanian defender opted to pull down the Qarabag attacker.

This was, rightly so, an instant red card for Dragusin, leaving Spurs to battle on for 83 minutes with ten men. Now, the centre-half will have to face the consequences, and will leave Postecoglou with a decision to make for the next game.

Dragusin will only be banned for one European game after his red card, meaning he will miss the upcoming Europa League clash with Ferencvaros on Thursday, October 3.

He will be free to return to continental action for the visit of AZ Alkmaar on October 24.

Who will play instead?

Postecoglou will more than likely turn to Cristian Romero to play centre-half in Hungary. The Argentina defender missed the last Europa League game due to serving his own suspension which had carried over from Tottenham’s Champions League second-round tie with AC Milan back in 2023.

Romero will almost certainly play three games in one week, then, first playing against Manchester United in the league on Sunday, before taking on Ferencvaros, and then likely being involved in the Premier League fixture against Brighton next Sunday.

We would imagine Ben Davies will play alongside Romero in Europe, with Micky van de Ven likely to be given a rest.

Postecoglou could give youth a chance

Postecoglou could also turn to youngster Alfie Dorrington if he’s feeling brave. Indeed, the youth team star could even start over Romero if Postecoglou really wants to take a risk, or at the very least, he could line up next to the vice-captain.

Against lesser opposition like Ferencvaros, I think the Spurs boss has to make some changes and give players a chance. If Romero is indeed playing, there’s no reason not to trust Dorrington at the back, too.
