Game marred by offensive chants

Ange Postecoglou’s men delivered a statement performance at Old Trafford, dominating from start to finish and demonstrating how hard they are to stop when they click.

However, some of the shine has been taken off the on-pitch performance by what happened in the away section at the stadium.

Homophobic chants were reportedly heard being sung by some of the travelling contingent, and the club have now released a statement condemning it.

Tottenham will work with the police

In a statement on their official website, Spurs have labelled the homophobic chants as ‘unacceptable’, and ‘hugely offensive’, adding that it is ‘no way to show support for the team’.

They also confirmed that they will be working closely with the Police and stewards to identify anyone instigating or joining in with such offensive chants.

Spurs further revealed that they will continue our work with their LGBTQ+ supporters’ association, ‘Proud Lilywhites’, to ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans on matchdays.

They also called on the supporters in attendance at Old Trafford to report anything they’ve seen or heard in confidence to supporterservices@tottenhamhotspur.com

Football continues to wrestle with homophobia

While society as a whole has made progress on LGBTQ+ rights, football still lags behind in that respect.

It has been well-documented that one of the main reasons why gay footballers are hesitant to come out publicly is because they could be subject to discriminatory chants at stadiums (Channel 4 Sport).

Chants like the ones heard on Sunday prove that their fears are legitimate, and supporters should thus do their part to report anyone engaging in this type of discriminatory chanting.
