Pedro Mendes names four players Spurs should look at signing in 2025

Pedro Mendes believes that Tottenham should look towards the Portuguese market to improve their side, naming several top players in Primeira Liga who would fit in well in Ange Postecoglou’s set-up.

Spurs are in the middle of a squad rebuild

While Tottenham’s current squad looks a lot different to the one Postecoglou inherited last summer, the Australian will acknowledge that the team is still a work in progress.

The Spurs head coach will continue putting his own imprint on the side over the next few transfer windows as he looks to build a squad that can compete on multiple fronts.

Tottenham fans will feel that there are still many areas where the club need to add more quality if they are to harbour ambitions of challenging the best teams in the division.

Portugal the place to look?

Mendes believes that Tottenham could do a lot worse than looking at the best players currently plying their trade in his home country. He believes that many current Primeira Liga stars could take this Spurs side to the next level.

The former Tottenham midfielder named Alan Varela, Pedro Goncalves, Hidemasa Morita and Morten Hjulmand as the ones who can improve the North London side.

When asked who Tottenham should go after, Mendes told BoyleSport: “I’d like to see Alan Varela from Porto. And I think Pedro Goncalves from Sporting could also fit into the way Spurs play…Even Morita…And Hjulmand, the Danish holding midfielder.”

Two of them watched by Tottenham?

If reports over recent months are to be believed, two of the four names that Mendes mentioned are already on Spurs’ radar.

It was claimed by Record (via SportWitness) back in June that Tottenham have watched Hjulmand’s progress closely and have even held talks over a possible transfer.

His Sporting teammate, Goncalves, is also reportedly a target for the Premier League side, with 90 min claimed last year that Ange Postecoglou’s men have scouted the attacker.

The 26-year-old is protected by a release clause of €80m (£69m) in his contract, according to O Jogo.
