Ten-men Tottenham had to fight

Disaster struck for Tottenham early in the game as Radu Dragusin was sent off in the seventh minute after a lapse in concentration, with the referee deeming that the defender had denied Qarabag a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

The Spurs players thus had to pull their socks up and work extremely hard to make up for the numerical disadvantage, and they did just that.

In the end, Tottenham’s attackers came to the party, clinically putting away their chances, with the 3-0 scoreline flattering the home side.

Plenty of room for improvement

Qarabag got plenty of joy against a 10-men Spurs side but they were unable to take their opportunities, even missing a penalty on 58 minutes.

Hoddle was concerned with the way the Azerbaijani side cut Tottenham open, suggesting that Postecoglou’s men have to improve a lot defensively.

The Spurs legend said on TNT Sports (26/09/24) about the Lilywhites’ win: “They never make it easy this club, to be fair. It was a good win. They got a clean sheet but I don’t know how they got that.

“There was a lot of chances created by Qarabag, but they didn’t take them – fortunately for Tottenham. Going forward, they looked exciting again and some of the youngsters came in and did well.

“Johnson got another goal … so it’s a great result and a great start to the Europa League campaign. but they’ve got to improve on the performance (in future).”

Attack the best form of defence

Predictably, Postecoglou’s men continued to attack and commit bodies forward despite their numerical advantage and the result suggests that the game plan worked.

The Australian might argue that if Tottenham had decided to camp near the edge of the box and take a safety-first approach, the result might have been a lot different.
