Teammate leaps to Radu Dragusin’s defence after Europa League red card
Radu Dragusin has been defended by his international teammate for what he did in the Lilywhites’ Europa League clash against Qarabag.
Lapse in concentration
Radu Dragusin was handed a start by Ange Postecoglou in Tottenham’s Europa League opener on Thursday, ironically covering for Cristian Romero was was sitting out due to a red card suspension.
However, the Romanian’s evening just lasted seven minutes as he suffered a lapse in concentration and failed to control Micky van de Ven’s pass.
Qarabag striker Juninho capitalised on the loose ball, and Dragusin panicked and brought down the Brazilian, with the referee deciding to brandish a red card to the Tottenham man.
Dragusin’s action defended
The former Genoa man was visibly distraught at what happened as he lost what was a rare opportunity to impress Postecoglou and stake his claim for a place in the starting eleven.
However, Dragusin’s international teammate Florin Taase has defended the defender’s actions, insisting that anyone can make that kind of a mistake.
When asked about the Spurs man’s red card, he told Gazeta Sporturilor “There are tackles and tackles, I don’t think any player wants to get a red card. There are mistakes, anyone can make them.”
Headache for Postecoglou
The red card means that Dragusin is also suspended from Tottenham’s Europa League game against Ferencvaros next week.
That means that Postecoglou would likely have to play Cristian Romero in the clash at Hungary, which is not ideal as the game is sandwiched between away trips to Manchester United and Brighton.
