Drawing Man City in the Carabao Cup is a win-win situation for Spurs – opinion

So, Tottenham Hotspur will once again have to get past Manchester City if they are to win a trophy, and the fanbase are a little bit worried, naturally. But guess what? Whatever the result, there is a big positive to take from this Carabao Cup draw.

Win one – Spurs can beat Man City

Obviously, the idea of playing Manchester City strikes fear into pretty much any team in the world. They’re relentless winners, and when they’re in the mood, they can steamroll just about any opponent.

But, let’s not forget how hard they found it to get the better of Tottenham over the last few years, especially at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It wasn’t until last season that Pep Guardiola finally broke that curse, but you can bet that a trip to our stadium still plagues his mind.

Then, there’s the fact that Guardiola has already revealed he will be playing a weakened team in the Carabao Cup as he doesn’t want to waste energy on the competition and detract from their challenge for the Premier League and Champions League (ESPN).

A second-string City team is still likely to include players like Stefan Ortega, Matheus Nunes, Jack Grealish, and a whole host of top youngsters, but it’s a team Spurs can overcome for sure.

And, just think, if we do beat City, that’s one of the favourites out of the competition, giving Tottenham the spirit and belief to go all the way.

Win two – Losing to City wouldn’t be the end of the world

Okay, that’s the ideal scenario, but let’s think about the worst case now… we lose to City and go out of the Carabao Cup in the fourth round. Do we want to win that competition? Of course. But is it the best competition we are involved in this year? No.

Exiting our lowest priority cup by October would give our players more chance to focus on the Premier League, the Europa League, and the FA Cup.

No one at the club would ever admit it, but you can’t deny that having one less competition to worry about would significantly improve our odds of going all the way in another. We all secretly know the Europa League is the one we really want this year, so let’s not sweat the Carabao Cup too much.

Is this me getting an excuse ready well in advance in case we do lose? Perhaps. But it’s also an entirely rational way of looking at another very difficult cup draw, and remembering there can be a silver lining to any situation.
