Spurs fans will love the promise Guardiola has made for Carabao Cup clash

Pep Guardiola has made a rather strange announcement about the Carabao Cup, with Man City being drawn against Tottenham Hotspur in the next round of the competition.

Fixture congestion is a hot topic

We are now starting to hear managers and players make an increasing number of complaints about the ever-growing fixture list.

With the new formats of the Europa League and the Champions League entailing two extra league-phase matches, the sides competing in Europe face an extremely crowded calendar over the next two months.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy spoke about it in the recent fan forum held on Monday, with both the Spurs head coach and chairman admitting that they would like to see a reduction in the number of matches.

Guardiola announces intention

Guardiola has now become the latest to voice his frustrations about the schedule and the Man City boss has done so with a surprising statement.

His side is due to travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the Carabao Cup fourth round on October 29, and he has made it clear that he will be fielding a second string or a team of youngsters in that clash.

Guardiola said about the upcoming clash – before his side were actually drawn against Spurs (via MEN): “The next round, I announce to you now: I will play the players who play less minutes or play the second team. We are not going to waste energy on this competition for sure.

“I don’t know what will happen, if we have a lot of injuries we play the second team. If we have all the squad ready it’s a good competition to play the rhythm.”

Quantity over Quality

With the governing bodies adding ever more matches to the fixture list, a natural consequence is a drop in the quality of the games.

With clubs having an increasing number of injuries, with players playing through fatigue and the squads being rotated, we get to see the best players take on each other less and less often.

One can argue that the schedule also gives an unfair advantage to clubs with the most resources, who can assemble a stronger squad.
