Ian Wright says Postecoglou is not playing to Spurs star’s strengths

Ian Wright is perplexed by the fact that Tottenham Hotspur are not playing directly to Dominic Solanke more often to allow the striker to hold up the ball and run the channels.

Solanke has only played twice for Spurs

Solanke made his first home start for Spurs on Sunday, almost a month after his debut against Leicester City, with the centre-forward shaking off an ankle injury that saw him miss the clashes against Everton and Newcastle United.

The 26-year-old certainly looked lively in the North London derby and made himself a handful, but he was feeding off scraps all game, with the Gunners suffocating Tottenham’s attackers with their low block.

Solanke did have a golden opportunity in the first half when Tottenham won possession high up the pitch but the striker hesitated and eventually failed to get a shot away.

He also came very close to scoring later in the half, with his looping header going just wide off the far post from a James Maddison cross.

Ian Wright says Spurs are not using Solanke correctly

Wright believes that Tottenham have to bring their record signing into the game by finding him early and allowing him to run the channels.

The former Arsenal man said on Kelly and Wrighty Show: “What I think with Dominic Solanke is that he’s done the work. He left Chelsea, went to Liverpool, went to Bournemouth, he’s not scored copious amounts of goals, but we’ve seen what he’s capable of.

“He should be in that phase in his mind where he’s thinking ‘right I’m going to go there.’ Because his link-up play and hold-up play and running channels is very good.

“He could give Spurs a different option, they can play up to him and go long, he can give them options other people can’t and I can’t understand why they’re not making him focus on that so that when the chances come he’s more relaxed about it rather than feeling at the moment he’s in there predominantly to score goals.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have been impressed with Solanke’s link-up and hold-up play in his two matches so far but the 26-year-old needs to find the back of the net quickly.

The longer he goes without scoring, the more the pressure of the price tag will start to tell.
