AC Milan want to beat Spurs to Johnny Cardoso, even with the purchase clause

Tottenham Hotspur may not be able to get their hands on Johnny Cardoso despite their purchase option as Calciomercato are now reporting that AC Milan could sign the Real Betis star in January.

Tottenham have a purchase clause for Cardoso

Spurs can sign Cardoso for £25m in the summer of 2025, with the North London club acquiring the option on the 22-year-old as part of Giovani Lo Celso’s sale to Betis.

Tottenham will thus be keeping a close eye on the USA international’s progress, with some journalists even suggesting that the Betis man could replace Yves Bissouma next summer if the Mali international does not show consistency this season (Football.London).

However, it turns out that Spurs might not even have the chance to activate the option as Milan are now plotting a move for Cardoso in January.

AC Milan want to sign Cardoso in January

Calciomercato explain that the Rossoneri will be without the injured Ismael Bennacer for the rest of this year and are thus expected to enter the market for a new number six in January.

They have allegedly identified Cardoso as a target, with Milan having ‘every intention of initiating’ contacts over a deal for the American in the winter.

Tottenham’s purchase option on Cardoso does not come into play until next summer, so the Italian giants may be looking to steal a march on the North Londoners.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Milan do make an approach for Cardoso, Tottenham might reach out to the player’s agent and ask him to stay put in the summer, informing them that they intend to activate the clause.

Perhaps Spurs could even decide to try to get a deal done in January if they fear the Serie A side could sign the player.
