Arsenal legend explains why he is ‘worried’ about Dominic Solanke at Spurs

Ian Wright says Dominic Solanke looks like his head is scrambled when he gets in front of goal, suggesting that the striker is lacking the required composure when he gets into good positions.

Solanke is waiting for his first Spurs goal

Solanke would have hoped to make it a fairytale home debut by scoring in the North London Derby and instantly becoming a Tottenham hero, but that was not to be on Sunday.

The striker certainly had the chance to do so, particularly in the first half when Tottenham won the ball high up the pitch, with Arsenal lacking numbers at the back. However, the Spurs striker took too much time to sort out his feet and in the end, he failed to even get a shot away.

The 26-year-old will be hoping that he gets his first goal quickly so that the pressure is off his shoulders, with the weight of his price tag likely to increase as he goes more games without scoring.

Solanke needs to calm down, says Wright

However, Wright believes that Solanke is lacking the required calmness in front of the goal and is thus making the wrong decision.

The former Arsenal man said on Wrighty’s House podcast: “When you look at the chances that Ollie Watkins got, I think those are the kind of chances that Dominic Solanke probably needs right now.

“Because every chance I’ve seen him have up to this point, where he’s got to manufacture it so it’s coming, he’s got to get the touch right, he doesn’t get the shot off for some reason, or he’s making the wrong decisions.

“When I saw him against Leicester, you know, he’s got so much time and he’s blasting it straight at the keeper just because he wants to get it done.

“Instead of getting cold in the moment, like Dennis Bergkamp would say, you have to be cold in that moment. He would say that to us – you what I mean about going into a place of just like calm, you know what I mean?

“He had more than enough time to take that ball and on his left foot and get the shot away. He didn’t even get the shot away. That’s what worries me with him, I think he’s thinking about it too much.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is clear that Solanke is desperate to get his first goal out of the way, which one would expect, given the pressure of the big price tag. He will be a lot calmer once he scores a couple as that will help him grow in confidence and allow him to express himself on the pitch.
