Tottenham look to tie key player down to new contract amid Real Madrid interest
Tottenham Hotspur are keen to tie down World Cup-winning defender, Cristian Romero, to a new deal at the club with rumours circulating of interest from Champions League winners, Real Madrid.
Romero is attracting plenty of interest
Tottenham centre-back, Cristian Romero, is believed to have attracted plenty of suitors in the summer. Gaston Edul on X reported that Manchester United, PSG and Real Madrid all expressed an interest in the Argentine.
Spurs have set their stool out for any suitors, simply announcing that their vice-captain is not for sale. Edul claimed that Tottenham and Postecoglou believe the 26-year-old is so ‘essential’ that they wouldn’t even place any price tag upon him.
Romero, who joined Tottenham three years ago, has a deal that expires in the summer of 2027. Summer interest has potentially led Spurs to consider renewing the defender’s deal to match their stubborn negotiation stance.
Tottenham want to extend Romero’s stay
Romero continues to be a key player for Tottenham this season with the Argentine being the only player with double-digit tackles to record a 100% tackle success rate, as per Stat Muse.
The belief that Tottenham want to extend Cristian Romero’s contract at Tottenham stems from Football Insider’s report which details that Spurs want to lengthen the 26-year-old’s current deal in response to interest from top clubs across Europe, most notably Real Madrid.
It’s reported by Football Insider that Spurs will aim to sit down with Romero next summer in order to thrash out a longer, improved contract for the ex-Juventus central defender.
This comes despite Romero himself retweeting a post that detailed the player’s frustration at Tottenham.
Spurs Web opinion
Romero has proved both for club and country that he wields all the ability to be one of the world’s best defenders, although the 26-year-old sometimes struggles to reflect as such on a consistent basis, with it first being his ill-discipline and now being his tendency to lose defensive focus.
However, Romero is one of the squads rare leaders, a player of great value and experience and therefore Tottenham trying to tie Cristian down to an extended deal will be a welcome piece of news for many Spurs fans.
