Why the ‘Ange out’ calls are coming far too early from impatient fans – opinion

Let’s face it, we all need to decompress and vent after that result against Arsenal in the North London Derby. Well, you came to the right place!

Notes on a North London Derby defeat

Here are some notes and comments you have probably read in the past few days after our defeat to Arsenal:

“Spurs have just four points from their opening four fixtures, their worst start to a season since 2015.” (SportsBible.com)

“I ALWAYS win things in my second year.” (SkySports via X)

“Same old story as Arsenal efficiency beats Spurs’ idealism.” (PremierLeague.com)

I think most can admit that this start of the season isn’t what we expected or hoped for after a multitude of new signings and second-year promises from Ange Postecoglou. The offence has been toothless in the attacking third and we have been left scratching our heads.

We’ve seen our leaders in Heung Min Son and James Maddison look like shells of their former selves being dragged along for the ride. Cristian Romero turning off his mental during corners has also been a routine sight.

The murmurs for “Ange out” have grown slightly, but I’m here to remind those who wear the badge proudly that the best is yet to come. The stats prove that his philosophy works.

Spurs rank 2nd in touches and 7th in big chances missed missed. (PremierLeague.com). Spurs rank 3rd on shots, 3rd in attempted passes, 2nd in attacking third touches, and 1st in time of possession. (fbref.com). These stats alone should provide context about the dominance we have provided over other teams.

The biggest issue is that we are unable to convert in the box. Most teams we have faced have come out in a low box, five in the back on defence to force Spurs to be more methodical, and it has worked to their success. We are wasteful in the chances we take.

A good team firing on all cylinders takes advantage of those opportunities and unfortunately, we have not. So this issue isn’t an Ange issue, this is a player’s issue. Instead of bashing Ange, we should be bashing the players and management to provide the right players Ange needs to master this system.

Yes, we have brought in a bunch of youngsters, but if we want to win silverware for years to come, you have to build this year and for the out years no?

Arsenal, our most hated rivals, have done that. It wasn’t foreign to hear Artetta out on social media and even in his stadium. But the board stuck with his vision and backed him. Has he won a title? No. But He’s been the closest manager to winning the Premier League other than Pep. Last year he lost the title by 2 points. This game is won by fine margins and we still haven’t got that part figured out.

Spurs fans should stick behind the team

So what can we provide as a fanbase to a team that needs our support as of this moment? Time and patience. Ange stated that he ALWAYS wins things in his second year. We are currently in week 5 of 38.

Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s done it. In my lifetime as a Spurs fan (5 due to my love of American Eggball), I’ve seen nothing but spiderwebs in the trophy cabinet and more managers than one should count.

I understand some fans were frustrated this offseason. That’s fair. But I’m from the belief that before things get better, certain things need to break.

And while Ange is currently breaking this team to fit the mould that he wants for him, maybe we should break ourselves of the entitled belief of a quick fix and give our gaffer the patience he needs.
