Spurs could have a blockbuster tie in the fourth round

Tottenham face Coventry City away this evening in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with Spurs looking to end their barren run of silverware since 2008.

Although Coventry City will be no pushovers, Spurs were handed a more favourable draw due to the Carabao Cup’s newly formatted draw which ensured none of last season’s top six Premier League teams could meet each other due to a congested fixture schedule.

The separation of the so-called ‘big teams’ from each other is not extended to the fourth round draw, with a North London derby one of the many headline clashes that could occur should Tottenham and the rest of the top six progress as expected.

When will the draw take place?

Despite playing their tie on the 18th of September, Tottenham will be made to wait until late on the 25th of September to find out their fourth-round opponents should they beat Coventry City, according to The Sun.

The delay is to allow the Champions League clubs to all play their games, with their matches held a week later than everyone else’s due to the newly formatted Champions League league phase taking place at the same time as the usual Carabao Cup games.

The draw will be performed shortly after Liverpool v West Ham United and broadcasted live on Sky Sports Main Event/Football, although the draw remains subject to delay should Liverpool’s clash with West Ham go to penalties.

Spurs Web opinion

Whilst there is always the argument that you have to beat the best teams in order to win a trophy, and in that case, Spurs’ prospective fourth-round draw shouldn’t matter, but I would more than welcome an ‘easy’ draw at home to a League Two side.

Spurs were given tough draws in every competition last season and ultimately it led to an early exit from both the FA and Carabao Cup. This season, Tottenham and Postecoglou look desperate for success and in a competition where many big teams make shock exits, an easier draw would be ideal.
