‘Romero is good at kicking people’ – Pundit hurls criticism at Tottenham duo
Former Spurs midfielder, Jamie Redknapp, has claimed both Guglielmo Vicario and Cristian Romero are to blame for Tottenham’s set-piece woes, which continued against Arsenal today.
Vicario’s ability to deal with set-pieces has come under scrutiny
The narrative around Tottenham’s goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, not being able to deal with set-piece scenarios was birthed after the Italian keeper failed to deal with a corner against Manchester City in the FA Cup.
Vicario’s struggles from set-pieces continued after he once again failed to deal with a Nathan Ake header in January, with Tottenham going on to concede a troubling 18 goals from set-pieces since the start of the 2023/24 season. (BBC Sport)
Although Tottenham and Vicario were yet to concede from a set-piece this season heading into the North London Derby, Arsenal broke that record as Gabriel Magalhaes nodded in the Gunners’ winner in the 64th minute from a corner.
Jamie Redknapp has criticised Vicario and Romero
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Jamie Redknapp has criticised Vicario but also claimed that Cristian Romero should take more ownness from set-piece scenarios too.
He told Sky Sports: “Teams pray on Vicario’s weakness from set-pieces – because people have seen Vicario’s weakness, they stick loads of players in front of him.
“Tottenham, they have gone for man-to-man so they are all obsessed with their players and it is a little bit selfish.
“Yes, Romero is good at kicking people, but when it comes to stuff like that he has got to do better”.

It has become apparent that the set-piece narrative surrounding Tottenham, Postecoglou and Vicario will be one that persists until a drastic change is made to the volume of set-piece goals Tottenham concede.
I held hope that Spurs had fixed the issue and utilised the summer to work on their approach so the problem would fall away from people’s consciousness. However, Vicario hasn’t helped himself at all by conceding yet another corner goal that, I believe, was down to his decision to remain on his goal line.
