Postecoglou insists Spurs have made progress despite worst start for nine years

Despite Tottenham’s concerningly poor start to the season, emphasised by a home loss to bitter rivals Arsenal, Ange Postecoglou claims his side are progressing – even if results don’t reflect as such.

Tottenham suffer poor start to Postecoglou’s second season

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur fell to their second defeat of the season at home to Arsenal, making it back-to-back defeats for the Australian manager either side of the international break.

The former Celtic manager is notorious for achieving success in his second season at a club, however, he has his work cut out for him if he’s set to repeat that at Spurs.

With two losses, a draw and just a singular win in the club’s first four games of the season, it is currently Tottenham’s worst start to a campaign for nine years. (Caught Offside)

Postecoglou insists Spurs have made progress

Despite his team’s sluggish start to the season, Postecoglou claims that his side has still progressed from their first campaign under the Australian.

He told Football.London: “We are a team that is progressing in many areas, with all that progress there are always new challenges and things you need to overcome.

“When I look at the four games in isolation this year, the football is probably more consistent and compelling than our first four games last year but obviously our results don’t reflect that.

“So, I think we have made progress in certain areas but there are other areas we need to improve on and that’s my job to fill those gaps as quickly as possible.”

Spurs Web opinion

In terms of pure performance in terms of domination of chances and possession, Tottenham have progressed under Postecoglou when you compare Spurs’ start to how they finished the season.

However, the fact that Postecoglou started his first season so well has perhaps nullified his arguments on progression as a team and makes the current performances even more infuriating, as we’ve seen how well this team can work.

The overarching issues of not being able to break down a low block and not creating enough clear-cut chances remain however and while the entirety of that issue doesn’t lie upon Postecoglou, it is something that desperately needs to be improved.
