Alasdair Gold reveals how Postecoglou feels about Spurs’ recruitment approach
Alasdair Gold reveals that Ange Postecoglou is a big fan of having a data-led approach to recruitment, with the Australian very insistent on seeing the metrics of potential targets.
Tottenham have completely changed their approach
It has been well documented that the club’s technical director Johan Lange and chief scout Rob Mackenzie use data analysis to narrow down their list of targets and identify players with the specific attributes that Postecoglou is looking for (GiveMeSport).
So far, one has to say that the approach has been successful, with the club having made a few smart acquisitions recently.
However, not everyone is a fan of such an approach, with the club’s former scout David Pleat telling The Athletic recently that he believes that having eyes and ears on the ground is essential.
The 79-year-old explained that the reason the club let him go earlier this summer was because they now primarily use data to scout players.
This has caused some debate on social media among Spurs fans about the use of data and the importance of directly scouting players.
Postecoglou likes using data to influence transfers
Gold has now explained that unlike Tottenham’s former managing director, Fabio Paratici, Postecoglou is very much a fan of using data to identify players.
The journalist said on The Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast: “Postecoglou is very keen for the club to modernise and go down that route (data-driven).
“He was one that certainly I think maybe Fabio Paratici is one that would just deal with his feelings about players, his beliefs about players, ones that he’d seen with his own eyes which you know is still a very effective way of doing things.
“But I think when Postecoglou came in, it was very much okay, so where’s the data on this? Where’s this? Where’s that? I want to see exactly why this player you are suggesting fits my system.”

It has never been a binary choice between data and direct scouting, with both being important aspects of modern-day recruitment. The club crunch the numbers to initially screen all the players and arrive at a shortlist of targets before scouting them individually.
