What did Rodrigo Bentancur say?

The comment, made by Bentancur back in Uruguay in June, created a lot of controversy. While being interviewed on the television programme Por la Camiseta, the midfielder was asked by the host for a Tottenham player’s shirt and he responded: “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin as well because they all look the same.”

The distasteful line did not go down well on social media among fans. Bentancur issued an apology to his teammate, admitting that it was “a very bad joke”. He also told Son that he loves him and would never intend to disrespect or hurt him (talkSPORT).

The midfielder’s apology was accepted by Son, who stated that Bentancur realised his mistake, adding that the pair remain ‘brothers’ and will continue fighting for the same objectives this season (ESPN).

Meanwhile, Tottenham also released a statement on the matter, confirming that they will provide further education for all players in line with their diversity, equality and inclusion objectives.

The FA charge Rodrigo Bentancur

Almost two months on from the incident, the FA have now charged Bentancur, with the governing body stating that the Tottenham man’s comments involve an ‘aggravated breach’ due to a reference to Son’s nationality/ethnicity.

Their statement reads: “Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged with an alleged breach of FA Rule E3 for misconduct in relation to a media interview.

“It’s alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has breached FA Rule E3.1 as he acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute.

“It’s further alleged that this constitutes an “aggravated breach” which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin.

“Rodrigo Bentancur has until Thursday 19 September 2024 to provide a response to this charge.”

Spurs Web Opinion

You can understand why the FA decided to charge Bentancur as his comments are unacceptable. This kind of infringement usually seems to result in a fine, so one can expect that in the near future.
