Former defender says England teammates used to laugh at his low Spurs wages

Tottenham Hotspur may well be one of the richest football clubs in the world, but one former player has revealed he was made fun of during an England camp due to the low wages he was being paid while at Spurs.

Relegation battlers were paid more than Spurs players

The club is an absolute commercial behemoth these days, largely thanks to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the events and promotions outside of football that the club runs.

Within the Spurs squad, there are plenty of players on big wages these days, and the transfer fees the club splashes out certainly aren’t modest.

But, years ago, Danny Rose was subjected to ridicule from members of the England squad when he revealed how much he was paid by his club.

Speaking to the In The Zone podcast, Rose explained the situation: “When we would go away with England, the lads would laugh at us at what we’re being paid. And I have one friend who was at another club.

“I remember one season where West Brom were fighting relegation while we were near the top and some of their players were on more than what we were on. That wasn’t right. With Spurs and win bonuses, you had to win by at least a couple of goals to get a bonus from it.

“At the time, I don’t regret saying anything about it because it was the truth but now I think the lads are being paid appropriately.”

Not the first time Rose has spoken on the topic

Rose has always spoken quite freely about his time at Spurs, and isn’t one to bite his tongue if he feels he is not being treated fairly.

Speaking to The Sun back in 2017, Rose claimed he was ‘worth more’ than he was being paid and insisted he would not be settling for less, especially if he was helping the team be successful.
