Opinion: Arsenal may have to start this midfield trio against Spurs after latest injury

With Martin Odegaard potentially ruled out for the North London Derby following Declan Rice’s suspension, Arsenal may be forced to put out a strange midfield against Tottenham.

Micky Van de Ven and Solanke could return

While Ange Postecoglou might have a near-fully-fit squad to choose from on Sunday (with the expected returns of Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke), the opposite is true for Arteta.

Arsenal are now struggling with injuries and suspensions ahead of the game, with Rice picking up a red card against Brighton, while the likes of Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney are injured (Football.London).

In addition, there are also doubts about the availabilities of Riccardo Calafiori and Odegaard, both of whom picked up injuries on international duty.

Arsenal’s new-look midfield trio

Arteta has a particularly big conundrum in the middle of the park as he will potentially be without two of his regular starters.

With summer signing Mikel Merino also still nursing an injury, the Arsenal boss may have to line up with a midfield trio of Thomas Partey, Jorginho, and Kai Havertz.

That could potentially mean using Leandro Trossard as a false nine. Arsenal Insider also raise the possibility of Arteta handing 17-year-old midfielder Ethan Nwaneri his full Premier League debut.

Spurs Web Opinion

If Odegaard is ruled out of the game, Tottenham should dominate the midfield battle and would likely be in control of the game.

However, Arsenal still have the firepower up front to hurt Spurs while the Gunners’ defence will not be easy to break down.
