‘It burns’ – Spurs star admits he was not happy when Postecoglou benched him

Dejan Kulusevski confesses that he was not too happy when he was left out of Tottenham’s starting eleven against Leicester City.

Kuluseveski had been one of Tottenham’s best performers throughout pre-season, which is why it came as a shock when Ange Postecoglou left the Swede out of the club’s Premier League season opener against the Foxes.

The 24-year-old started on the bench at the King Power Stadium and came on in the second half but has subsequently started the next two clashes against Everton and Newcastle United.

Rather interestingly, Kulusevski has not started on the right wing in either of those two matches, playing as a right-sided number eight against the Toffees and starting as a false nine in the clash against the Magpies.

Kulusevski wants to start every game for Spurs

The former Juventus man has now spoken about being left out of the team but insisted that he used that as extra fuel to work harder and ensure that Postecoglou cannot leave him out again.

Kulusevski told Expressen (as relayed by Sport Witness): “It happens to all of us. I was benched for the first game in the Premier League with Tottenham, and it burns.

“But as I said, try to be as good as possible so you are never on the bench. But those are my thoughts, maybe they are not someone else’s thoughts.”

The problem Ange faces is that Kulusevski is not naturally suited to the right-wing position in his system. As a result, the Swede is competing with James Maddison for the number ten role if everyone is fit.

However, the Tottenham boss threw a curve ball against Everton by starting both Kulusevski and Maddison together in midfield, which we can perhaps hope to see in home matches against weaker teams.
