Report: Spurs star picks up injury on international duty ahead of Arsenal clash

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal come to blows this weekend in the first North London derby of the new season, but the Lilywhites could be without a key player after he picked up an injury on international duty.

Yves Bissouma concern for Spurs

The international break is always a tricky time for clubs, as they see their players head off to represent their country and pray that none of them return with an injury.

Spurs had seemingly got through the latest break unscathed, but on the final day of fixtures, Yves Bissouma picked up a knock and had to be substituted as his Mali side defeated Eswatini in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Bissouma scored the only goal of the game, hitting a strong shot from the edge of the box after picking up on a loose pass from the Eswatini defence in the seventh minute.

But on 66 minutes, the Mali midfielder was taken off the field after having his foot stamped on. The extent of the injury is currently unknown.

What can Spurs do?

Bissouma is on his way back to Hotspur Way today and will be assessed by the club doctors to determine whether he can play in the upcoming North London derby on Sunday.

If the 28-year-old is ruled out, Ange Postecoglou will have options to replace him. Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr are the more experienced players in the squad, while new signings Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall could also step in.

Spurs Web Opinion

The nature of the injury suggests Bissouma might be alright for the weekend, as I’m sure it’s more just discomfort than anything serious and long-lasting.

But, if he is to miss out, I would pair Bentancur and Sarr in the middle of the park as we will need their experience.
