How Spurs can earn Champions League football even if they finish sixth this season

Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to compete in the Champions League next season, but a top-four finish wouldn’t be the only way to secure qualification for the top continental competition.

Europa League is the key

Spurs fans had no European football to enjoy last season, after an eighth-placed finish in 2022/23 left the Lilywhites without any continental football for the first time since the 2009/10 season.

This year, Tottenham will be competing in the Europa League thanks to a fifth-placed finish in Ange Postecoglou‘s first season last term.

The North London side missed out on a top-four finish last season, ending up two points behind Aston Villa, who bagged a spot in this year’s Champions League.

But, while Spurs will be pushing to go one better and be in the top four this season, there is another way to secure Champions League football for next season, and it would mean Postecoglou’s side could technically not have to worry about their league position at all.

That’s right, all Spurs have to do is win the Europa League, and they will be given an automatic spot in next year’s elite competition regardless of how they perform in the Premier League. Simple, really.

How do they get there?

In order to make it to Bilbao for the Europa League final next year, Spurs will first need to make it out of the new league format first round of the tournament.

Tottenham have been drawn against Roma, Rangers, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar, Ferencvaros, Elfsborg, Qarabag, and Hoffenheim for that first stage.

Spurs Web Opinion

I genuinely think we should put everything into winning the Europa League. Not only would it mean we win a major trophy, it would also get us in the Champions League next year, too, which is obviously a big deal.
